Mexico City, January 6th, 2021 Angel Ventures announces its investment in Nilus, an Argentine foodtech company focused on eradicating food insecurity by streamlining inefficiencies in the supply chain and distributing healthy food to low-income communities. Angel Ventures’ investment will primarily help the Company fortify its expansion strategy and commercial activities in Mexico.

Nilus, founded by Ady Beitler, Karina Campos, and Ezequiel Lamonica in 2018, has developed a digital marketplace that connects food producers and retailers with excess inventory that suffers from aesthetic or packaging defects or that is near expiration with community kitchens in shelters, soup kitchens and schools throughout low-income neighborhoods. The Company crowdsources its delivery among drivers, streamlining and formalizing distribution. Nilus is currently operating in Argentina, Mexico and Puerto Rico, where it has delivered over 1.8 million plates of food to more than 110,000 people.

Considering that over 15% of food produced in Latin America is wasted or spoiled and +30% of Latin America’s population suffers from moderate to severe food insecurity, Nilus’ offerings help bridge these enormous supply side and demand side problems that plague the region and world. COVID-19 and its influences on the labor market has only increased the need for access to healthy and affordable food. These underlying factors, and the effectiveness of Nilus’ solutions, have led to over 66x sales growth from February to December of 2020.

“We are thrilled to join the Angel Ventures family. Throughout the due diligence process, the AV team proved once and again that they had massive value to add to our strategy, and that they are willing to work alongside our team in the pursuit of our mission. Nilus is making healthy food affordable for low-income people, by redesigning the value chain for the base of the pyramid. The challenge is as is big as the size the problem. But we’re confident that with partners like AV we will be successful in building the first impact-driven unicorn in Latin America” — Ady Beitler, Co-founder and CEO at Nilus.

Angel Ventures’ investment marks the most recent of numerous milestones for Nilus. Among other accolades, the Company was named a global changemaker by the Mohammed Bin Rashid Initiative for Global Prosperity, won the South Summit: Latin America Edition, and graduated from Harvard Innovation Lab’s Launch Lab X Program.

This investment highlights Angel Ventures’ commitment to innovative foodtech solutions that solve some of the region’s most critical problems, supported firmly by Nestlé, the Fund’s LP and strategic partner. “By leveraging a solution that reduces food waste and increases food security, Nilus is truly revolutionizing multiple facets of the traditional supply chain throughout Latin America. In a time when its services are more essential than ever, we are proud to support a company as sustainable as this one.” — Hernán Fernández, Managing Partner at Angel Ventures.
